Dog Becomes a ‘Grumpy Old Man’ After Losing His Brother—Until a Puppy Changes Everything

After losing his canine brother and becoming what his family affectionately called a “grumpy old man,” a 12-year-old German shorthaired pointer named Chester has found new life—and a new best friend—in an energetic rescue pup named Max.

Once distant and reserved, Chester now plays tug-of-war, races through the yard, and even shares his bed for cuddles. His transformation has been heartwarming.

“It was quite emotional for us as a family,” said Emily Gill, 24, Chester’s owner and a professional animal behaviorist from Newport, South Wales. “After we lost our old dog Timber, who was two years older than Chester, he became a proper grumpy old man. But since Max has been in our lives, Chester is acting like a puppy again.”

Chester’s newfound joy began when Emily took in Max, a 5-month-old puppy who needed help with behavioral training. Max had been brought to Emily through her work, but his original owners realized they couldn’t keep up with him. They asked Emily to take Max in, train him, and find him a new home.

But instead of rehoming Max, Emily kept him—for one very special reason.

“Max fit into our house really well because Chester showed an instant connection, which he has never shown with any other dogs,” she said. “That’s when we knew Max was the right fit for us.”

As a behaviorist, Emily often has dogs coming and going, especially puppies. Chester typically stayed aloof, knowing the visiting dogs wouldn’t be around long. But Max was different.

“I often have puppies in the house for training sessions, but Chester usually keeps his distance, knowing they’ll leave by the end of the day and he’ll have his home back,” Emily said. “By Max's third night staying with us, Chester figured out this one wasn’t leaving like the rest, so he shared his bed with him.”

“He even rested his head on Max’s body as a way to cuddle. I feel like he knew Max needed that friendship and guidance.”

Since then, Chester has completely turned around. He’s rediscovered his toys, joined Max in playful romps, and reawakened a youthful spirit.

“They like to play together in the same way Chester played with Timber,” Emily said. “They like playing tug-of-war over their toys or racing each other on walks.”

And the transformation hasn’t just affected Chester.

“It’s made all of us really happy to see this friendship bring new life to our old dog so he always has someone to play with.”
